So my father has been ill for 4 weeks, 2 weeks in hospital and 1 week in ICU, After a week in a induced coma and in the last 24 hrs they were able to lower the oxygen as previously was on 50%. The Doc are now thinking to reduce sedation and slowly wean my father off the ventilator. As they dont want to keep paitent in coma for too long. Im in two minds as i think they are rushing him shouldnt he remain in a coma longer to give his body a chance? And having seen everyone in here were paitents have been in coma for more than 2 weeks are doing fine. All his heart kidney and liver working fine.

Just dont want them to rush him for the sake of it.

The longer your father is in a coma he is more likely ( this is not definite) to suffer more severe muscle waste, it also increases the chances of your father having ICU delirium ( this is temporary).

Basically the longer you are on life support, the longer the rehabilitation - I was told it would take 10-14 days for me to recover from everyday in ICU. My family had to trust that the staff were making the right decision at the right time.

So then trying to take him off is good ?

I am not medically trained to give you that assurance. The staff will be constantly weighing up the benefit against the negative aspects - the ICU staff will be making decisions in his interest.

It is possible to lose 1kg of lean muscle tone a day in ICU. It takes much longer to reestablish this muscle - this weakness impinges on the individual’s ability to under take rehab physio - essential for getting home.

There is a post titled PICS, sleep disorder & fatigue - it describes what your Dad will have to go through ( some of it anyway) / these are normal legacies of ICU

Hopefully it is a very promising sign - but as you know, things change hour to hour

If they are trying to wean him off it's a good thing. It means he is showing progress. Long periods of time on the ventilator is not something you would like.
